Zinc oxide is zinc that has been oxidized and the chemical formula for it is ZnO. It is naturally occuring in nature and this natural form is called zincite. However, this natural form is rare and not used in commercial applications such as sunscreen. The zinc oxide used by Salon Naturals is manufactured from recycled zinc that is purified through a distillation process. It is pharmaceutical grade, uncoated, non-nano particle zinc oxide.

Zinc oxide protects the skin from the sun by sitting on top of the skin and either scattering or absorbing ultraviolet rays. Not only is zinc oxide considered the safest sunscreen ingredient currently on the market, but also the single most effective stand-alone sunscreen ingredient. It is a proven to provide truly broad spectrum protection and has a long, reliable safety record. It is effective against UVA, UVB and even UVC rays.

There are some very important differences in the types of Zinc Oxide used in sunscreens.  The primary factor separating these types is the size of the individual zinc oxide particles.  Non-nano particle Zinc Oxide can not contain particles that are smaller than 100nm. It is believed that particles smaller than this (nano-particles) can more easily penetrate the skin and enter the body's bloodstream.

Choosing sunscreens that use only non-nano zinc oxide avoids this risk without sacrificing performance and protection from damaging sun rays. The trade off for consumers is that non-nano zinc oxide can be slightly more whitish when initially applied to the skin and the lotion itself may feel somewhat less creamy. Some users may be able to feel a very slight grittiness in the lotion compared to those made with nano-particles although most users do not report feeling this difference.

Zinc oxide - especially non-nanoparticle zinc oxide - is widely accepted as a safe ingredient that provides superior protection from daily sun exposure.
