ewg's cosmetic database
getting the most from this useful tool.
|
As a first step, it's a good idea to read EWG's user guide and the useful FAQ section they provide.
As with any tool, the cosmetic database has both strengths and weaknesses. A recent revamp of the site has addressed many of the information gaps and no doubt they will continue to expand and improve the data made available to consumers.
To ensure consumers are making the best use of the site, the following reminders may prove helpful:
- While virtually all commonly used ingredients are listed, the safety data of some is not yet available on the database. Pay close attention to the "Data Availability" ranking of ingredients to ensure this lack information is considered in your purchasing decisions.
- The information found in the database should not be considered exhaustive. Use the database as one of many tools at your disposal in selecting ingredients and products that are appropriate for your personal health and safety priorities.
- A score of zero for an ingredient or product that also has a "Data Availability" ranking of "Fair" or better can most likely be considered an extremely safe option. However, scores of 1 and 2 are also very favorable. Scores of three or above should be investigated further and it is likely that safer ingredients and products are available that are better suited to your needs.
- While the sources of data and information are noted on the website, the actual studies and research reports are not always easily accessible. If you need further information, let us know. We are happy to help in whatever way we can.
Use Salon Naturals' Ingredient Knowledge Base along with the information available on EWG's cosmetic database. Combined with your own research, these sources will offer an excellent overview of the ingredients in your products.
